Ninth Inning Comeback Falls Short Vs. Cortland

The Johnson & Wales Baseball team fell to the Cortland Red Dragons on Saturday morning, marking the final game of the three played in New York.  JWU drops to 1-8 while Cortland improves to 13-6.

JWU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, with the second run coming on an EJ Leone (Peabody, Mass.) sacrifice fly.  The Red Dragons knotted the game, scoring one run in the bottom of the second and third frames.  JWU regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning on a Cody Pfeifer (Merrimack, N.J.) single that plated Leone.

Following the Wildcats regaining the lead, the Red Dragons scored six straight runs over the fifth and sixth innings, taking an 8-3 lead heading into the seventh frame.  In the top of the eighth inning, Leone drove in two runs on an RBI single to cut the lead to three at 8-5.  Owen Davis (Bristol, Conn.) then scored on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to two at 8-6.  The Red Dragons added two runs in the bottom of the frame, restoring their four-run advantage.

JWU responded in the top of the ninth inning on a Miles Kelly (East Setauket, N.Y.) single, plating Trevor Juan (Bolton, Conn.) and Xavier Bothelo (Rehoboth, Mass.).  Leone reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Kelly, but the Wildcats were unable to find the game tying run, falling 10-9 in nine innings.

JWU gets back in action on Tuesday when they travel to take on UMass Boston at 3:00pm.
