The Johnson & Wales Baseball team traveled to Cortland to take part in three gmaes over the weekend, with the first two happening on Friday. The Wildcats earned their first win of the season after splitting the doubleheader with the New York team, dropping the first game 7-5 before taking the second game 10-9.
In the first game, the hosts jumped out to a 7-0 lead, with the run being capped by a two run home run from Mat Bruno. The Wildcats responded in the top of the seventh inning. Griffin Synder (Marietta, Ga.) connected on a three run home run, driving home Miles Kelly (East Setauket, N.Y.) and Riley Hasson (South Portland, Me.). Owen Davis (Bristol, Conn.) followed it up with a home run of his own, cutting the lead to three. In the top of the ninth, Xavier Bothelo (Rehoboth, Mass.) drove home Kelly, but the Wildcats were unable to find the tying runs, falling 7-5.
In game two, JWU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before Nicolas Fortes launched a two run homer in the top of the second inning, giving JWU a 2-0 lead. Cortland responded, scoring eight straight runs from the second to fifth inning, putting JWU Down 8-2. In the top fo the seventh, the Wildcats bats exploded for eight runs, behind a two run double from EJ Leone (Peabody, Mass.) and a three run double from Trevor Juan (Bolton, Conn.). Juan later scored on an error, putting JWU up 10-8. Juan's run ended up being the game winning, as Cortland scored one more, but JWU held on as Noah Reeder (Davidsonville, Md.) earned the save.
The two teams will play one more game tomorrow morning, with first pitch slated for 11:00am.
