Reyes' Walkoff Hit Gives Wildcats 4-3 Win

Box Score

Sophomore Ivan Reyes (Cranston, RI) spanked a two-out walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to propel Johnson & Wales to a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Bridgewater State Wednesday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Reyes' bases-loaded single up the middle sent Tom Elkow (Jr., Morganville, NJ) home from third to give the Wildcats their first home win of the season.  JWU is now 4-6 on the year.

The Wildcats, who trailed 3-0 in the fifth, got their first two runs in the bottom of the inning when sophomore Lou Umberto (Cranston, RI) doubled and scored on Elkow's first of two hits, a double down the right field line.  Elkow later scored on a two-out single by Carlos Santabria (So., Pawtucket, RI) and closed the gap to 3-2.

Johnson & Wales tied the game in the eighth on yet another two-out hit, an RBI single by sophomore Ryan Cabral (Scituate, RI), which plated Sanabria, who singled for his third base hit of the game.

After relievers Taylor Pacific (Fr., Cranston, RI) and Bryan Quinlan (So., Pawtucket, RI) shut down all six batters they faced in the last two innings, the Wildcats began their ninth-inning rally.  With one out, Elkow singled and stole second on the next pitch to Kory Ferullo (Sr., Rochester, N.H.), who was intentionally walked.  A soft ground-ball out off the bat of Jordan Pilarski (Jr., Garnet Valley, PA) moved the runners to second and third.  Sanabria, 3-for-4 on the day, was intentionally walked, setting the stage for Reyes, who drilled a pitch through the box and into center field for the win.

The Bears had amassed a 3-0 lead as catcher Anthony DeLeo singled home Scott O'Brien, who led off the second inning with a double to left.  Bridgewater State scored twice in the fifth on a two-run single by first baseman Nick White, who sent Colin Ryan, who singled, and Jake Sousa, who was hit by a pitch, with his team-leading twelfth and thirteenth RBI of the season.

That was all that the Bears could muster off freshman Keith Grant (East Providence, RI), who allowed only four hits and struck out seven over his seven innings of work in only his second collegiate start.  When he retired the last three men he faced in the seventh inning, it started a string of nine consecutive Bears who were retired in order over the last three innings.

Quinlan was credited with his first win of the year, while Shane Surette suffered his second loss of the season.  The Bears fell to 3-7.

The Wildcats continue a six-game, four-day home stand on Thursday, when they take on Wentworth at 4pm.  Johnson & Wales hosts Castleton State for two games on Friday afternoon at 1pm, then begin their Great Northeast Athletic Conference season with two games against Lasell on Saturday, beginning at noon.
