Box Score The baseball squad wrapped up the annual southern trip with a 3-2 victory against Pennsylvania College of Technology in the battle of the Wildcats at the Cal Ripken Experience on Sunday morning.
Sophomore Chris Baldwin (Pawtucket, R.I.) had a pair of hits and scored a run for Johnson & Wales while sophomore Ivan Reyes (Cranston, R.I.) also had a pair of hits in the win for the Wildcats.
Dylan Scarigni went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for Penn College of Tech while Evan Vigna notched two hits in the setback for the Wildcats.
With the score tied 1-1 after three innings of play, Johnson & Wales took the 2-1 lead on an RBI groundout by sophomore Ryan Cabral (Hope, R.I.), scoring a run by junior Jordan Pilarski (Garnet Valley, Pa.) for the 2-1 advantage. JWU upped their lead to 3-1 in the top of the eight when Baldwin hit a two-out triple and later scored on a wild pitch for the 3-1 advantage. Penn Tech threatened in the top of the ninth as an RBI single by Tyler Cooklin cut the lead to 3-2. That would be all the scoring for the game, however as sophomore Bryan Quinlan (Pawtucket, R.I.) recorded a bases loaded strikeout to seal the 3-2 victory.
Senior Shawn Haugh (Tampa, Fla.) picked up the win on the mound for JWU, allowing two runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts in eight and two thirds innings of work while Quinlan notched the first save of the season for the Wildcats. Nick Perna suffered the setback for Penn Tech, allowing one run on two hits in three innings of relief.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 3-3 for the year while Penn Tech falls to 0-1 on the year. The Wildcats will return to action next week when they open the northern portion of their 2015 campaign with times, dates and opponents to be announced due to recent weather concerns.
