Box Score The baseball team suffered a 10-4 setback to Mass. Maritime Academy in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
The Buccaneers wasted no time as they capitalized on a lead-off walk in the top of the first and pushed across two runs when Greg Downs singled in Logan Sullo and Everett Walsh. MMA tallied a run in the third and another in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the frame. Junior Mark Kerwin (Smithfield, R.I.) kick started the Wildcats offense in the fifth with a lead-off double before coming around to score on a single by classmate Tom Elkow (Morganville, N.J.). Elkow later cut the Bucs lead in half when he crossed the plate after a double by sophomore Chris Baldwin (Pawtucket, R.I.). JWU brought the deficit to one in the bottom of the 6th but surrendered five runs in the next two innings as Mass. Maritime held on for the 10-4 victory.
Sophomore Lou Umberto (Cranston, R.I.) went 2-for-3 in the loss while Sullo and Downs each had four hits in the victory for the Buccaneers.
Sophomore Jake Marchesseault (Wyoming, R.I.) suffered his first loss of the year tossing three innings and surrendering five hits and three runs while striking out four. Kevin Kwedor earned his third win of the season for MMA in five innings pitched and giving up just two runs on seven hits.
With the loss, the Wildcats are now 3-6 while Mass. Maritime improves to 5-4 on the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, April 1st when they host Bridgewater State in a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
