The baseball team opened the 2015 campaign with a 10-4 victory over Mount St. Mary (N.Y.) at the Ripken Experience on Monday afternoon.
Junior Jordan Pilarski (Garnet Valley, Pa.) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for Johnson & Wales while sophomore Carlos Sanabria (Pawtucket, R.I.) and junior Tom Elkow (Morganville, N.J.) each had a pair of hits and a pair of runs scored in the victory for the Wildcats.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to the 3-0 advantage with three unearned runs in the top of the third. Mount St. Mary replied with three of their own in the bottom of the frame and both teams added runs in the middle of the contest to send the game into the seventh inning knotted at 4-4.
In the top of the seventh, Sanabria reached on a one out single and came around to score what would prove to be the game-winning run on a triple by sophomore Ryan Cabral (Hope, R.I.) to make the score 5-4. The Wildcats added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, including an RBI triple from Elkow to push the lead to 7-4. JWU then tacked on three more in the top of the ninth en route to the 10-4 victory.
Junior Nick Cesino (Scituate, R.I.) picked up the win in relief for Johnson & Wales, allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts in three and two third innings of relief.
With the win Johnson & Wales is now 1-0 for the year while Mount St. Mary falls to 0-2 for the season. The two teams will meet again on Wednesday, March 4th at 11:00 a.m.
