Women's Volleyball Knocks Off RIC, 3-0

The women's volleyball team posted a commanding 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-22) victory against intra-state rival Rhode Island College in a non-conference contest at the Murray Center on Tuesday evening.

In the first set, the two teams traded leads with the score tied 15-15 after a kill by Johnson & Wales junior Marissa Bunnewith (Millbury, Mass.). RIC then used a 6-2 run, capped by a kill by Michelle Malboeuf to make the score 21-17.  JWU controlled the action down the stretch, closing out the set with an 8-1 run, including a pair of kills by Bunnewith en route to the 25-22 win and the 1-0 lead.

The second set saw the Wildcats take control of the action early and held the 20-14 lead after a kill by junior Paula Cadavid (Pawtucket, R.I.).  JWU then cruised to the 25-14 victory and the 2-0 advantage in the match.

The third and final set had host Rhode Island College take the 13-10 lead after a kill by Abigayl White.  JWU responded, however and knotted the set 14-14 on a block by senior Alyssa Drapeau (Biddeford, Maine).  The Wildcats continued their run and held the 19-15 advantage after a block by Bunnewith and Drapeau.  JWU took the 25-22 win in the set to close out the 3-0 shutout victory.

JWU was led by Cadavid's 16 kills, nine digs and a .455 hitting percentage, while Drapeau recorded six kills, five blocks and 11 digs in the victory.  Senior Kaitlin Kuntz (Boone, Iowa) notched 21 digs while junior Kellen Tensen (New Canaan, Conn.) had 35 set assists in the win for the Wildcats.

Rhode Island College was led by Malboeuf, who finished with seven kills and 13 digs, while White handed out 20 assists. Mogan Stewart chipped in six kills in the loss for the Anchorwomen.

With the victory the Wildcats improve to 6-8 on the season while RIC falls to 5-8 on the year.  The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, October 1st when they host Salve Regina in a non-conference contest starting at 7:00 p.m.
