Box Score The women's volleyball team topped St. Joseph's of Maine, 3-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Center. The Wildcats took set one 25-14 and then won the next two by a score of 25-21 to earn the 3-0 victory.
In the first set, JWU jumped out to a 17-8 lead after back-to-back service aces by senior Ann Marie Nowicki (Lancaster, N.Y.). Senior Lauren Cordts (Amherst, N.H.) extended the lead to 23-13 before junior Kellen Tensen (New Canaan, Conn.) picked up the kill to end game one. The Monks kept things close to begin game two by tying the score at nine all and again at 13 apiece before the Wildcats ran off seven straight points which included two kills by junior Paula Cadavid (Pawtucket, R.I.). Cadavid picked up one of the final two points to take set two, 25-21. The third and final set was only separated by as many as five points but JWU managed to fend off the battling Monks to secure the 3-0 win.
JWU was led by Cadavid with 13 kills and 11 digs while Cordts registered ten kills for the Wildcats in the win. Tensen had 27 set assists and ten digs while senior Kaitlin Kuntz (Boone, Iowa) picked up 14 digs and served three aces for JWU.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 4-6 on the season and 1-0 in the GNAC while Saint Joseph's falls to 4-7 and 1-1 in conference play. JWU will return to action on Tuesday, September 23rd when they host Clark in a non-conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
