Box Score The men's soccer squad dropped a 5-0 decision against
intra-state rival Rhode Island College on the road on Tuesday
afternoon.
The Anchormen jumped out to a
quick, 2-0, advantage in the game;s opening minutes. In the fifth
minute, freshman midfielder Ryan Rasieleski (Coventry, R.I.)
advanced the ball up the right side into the box using a through
ball by junior forward Mike Patriarca (Warren, R.I.). Rasieleski
attracted defenders as he broke toward the right post, allowing him
to feed junior forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, R.I.) directly in
front of the net for the game's first goal. In the 17th minute,
senior midfielder Louis Tavares (East Providence, R.I.) stole an
opponent's dribble just before midfield and passed ahead to Costa
who quickly found Patriarca to the left of the net. Patriarca
outraced three defenders and scored on a cross. The Anchormen carried the, 2-0,
lead into halftime.
Thirteen minutes into the
second half, the Anchormen put the game out of reach. After RIC
intercepted a throw-in, senior midfielder Corey Carvalho
(Dartmouth, Mass.) took a bounding ball from midfield into the box,
where he was tripped up by a defender. The ball squirted ahead to
sophomore midfielder Michael Harrell (Reston, Va.), who scored from
the right of the net to earn the first marker of his collegiate
career.
In the 73rd minute, the Anchormen continued to take care of their
seniors. From above the box, freshman forward Brett Sinica
(Oakdale, Conn.) and sophomore forward Mark Butler (Warwick, R.I.)
used a give-and-go to advance the ball into the box. Senior
midfielder Jose Ruiz (Providence, R.I.) outraced a diving
goalkeeper to the loose ball and tapped it in for his sixth goal of
the season and a 4-0 lead.
Junior goalkeeper Nic Clark (East Bridgewater, Mass.) needed one
save to record his fifth shutout of the season and improve 10-4-1.
For the Wildcats, starting keeper Joe Ferraro (Freehold, NJ) took
the loss to fall to 4-10-1. JWU used four different netminders who
combined for a total of six saves. The Anchormen outshot the
Wildcats, 21-8.
With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 4-11-2, 10-5-1.
The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, October 30th when
they travel to Lasell for the quarterfinals of the Great Northeast
Athletic Conference Championship, starting at Noon.
