Box Score Freshman Tyler Gates
(Peru,
Maine) scored a pair of goals to
lead the Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team to
a 2-0 victory against Mount Ida in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference contest at Pierce Stadium on Wednesday
afternoon.
After one of the Johnson & Wales players received their
second yellow card with 3:32 left in the first half, the Wildcats
were forced to play a man down for the remainder of the
contest. Johnson & Wales had an 11-6 advantage in shots
for the stanza and the teams headed into halftime in a scoreless
tie.
Johnson & Wales got on the board early in the second half
when junior Stefano Magro
(Frankfort,
N.Y.) fed a pass to Gates.
Gates then buried a shot into the middle of the net to give the
Wildcats the 1-0 lead at the 46:52 mark. The Wildcats
extended their lead at the 66:03 mark after Gates headed in a throw
in from freshman Malcolm Turner (Cliffside
Park,
N.J.). JWU then held on for
the 2-0 victory.
Senior Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) had two
saves in goal for the Wildcats while junior Steven Enright
(South Kingston,
R.I.) made four stops for Mount
Ida.
With the win Johnson & Wales is now 3-10-2, 2-5-1 in league
play while Mount Ida falls to 1-13-1 for the year, 1-6-1 in league
play. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, October 23rd
when they host Emmanuel in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference
contest at 3:00 p.m.
