BOSTON, Mass. – The JWU (Providence) men's soccer team played Emmanuel (MA)College to a scoreless draw Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match at Roberto Clemente Field.
The Wildcats (1-0-1) held advantages in both shots (13-9) and corner kicks (6-1), while junior goalkeeper
William Slayton made three saves to record his second consecutive shutout. Senior
Bruno Teixeira paced the JWU attack with two shots while classmate
Christopher Vargas added two shots, both of which struck the left goal post.
JWU controlled much of the opening half, generating seven shots and three corner kicks. Sophomore
Ryan Alves put a shot on target in the 19th minute before Teixeira forced a save with less than a minute remaining in the half.
The Wildcats continued to pressure after halftime, earning three more corner kicks and creating several quality chances. Sophomore
Anthonie Hernandez had a shot saved in the 75th minute while Vargas registered his two shots on the left post in a six-minute span late in the match.
Despite little action in the first, Slayton kept the match scoreless in the second half with three second-half saves, including stops in the 49th, 71st and 80th minutes. Neither school was able to break through during the final 10 minutes as the Wildcats earned their first draw of the season.
The Wildcats will return home to Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex on Tuesday, Sept. 8 for a 6 p.m. match against Bridgewater St.
