Geil scores in 3-0 shutout of Lasell

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Hannah Geil scored her first goal of the season on a penalty stroke to help the JWU (Providence) field hockey team to a 3-0 win over Lasell University Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Senior Ava Pontes and sophomore Izzy Paes also tallied goals for the Wildcats, who moved to 4-1 with the win by outshooting the Lasers 28-5. Senior goalie Sophia Brea stopped all three shots she faced to notch her fourth shutout of the season.

Pontes fourth goal of the season 20 minutes into the match came off a pass from senior Emily Downing and proved to be all JWU would need. Geil's marker eight minutes into the second half doubled the lead before Paes collected her third of the season at 44:49 to cap the scoring. Juniors Ava Gaudette and Zoe Soletsky were credited with assists on Paes marker.

First-year Lucy Verderber paced JWU with six shots while five student-athletes recorded at least two.

The Wildcats – who outshot the Lasers 28-5 and held a 17-1 edge in penalty corners – host Gordon Saturday at noon.
