Warburton nets two goals in 6-0 thumping of Bears

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Sophia Warburton scored a pair of goals for the JWU (Providence) women's soccer team in a 6-0 shutout win over Bridgewater State University Tuesday night in non-conference action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Sophomore Sofia Soares added a goal and an assist as the Wildcats (1-0-0) outshot the Bears 30-7 and saw seven student-athletes record at last one point. Senior Ava Vaughan and first-year Samantha Rodes combined to make five saves in net for JWU, which opened the scoring less than five minutes into the match and never looked back.

Warburton's 25th career goal staked JWU to a 1-0 lead before sophomore Megan Kearney tallied her first collegiate marker 17 minutes later off a feed from senior Jessica Lee to double the lead. Soares then set up sophomore Emily See for her first collegiate goal in the 37th minute to close the first-half scoring.

In the second half, first-year Anna Button became the third Wildcat to notch her first collegiate tally on the night with a goal in the 52nd minute. Warburton added her second goal four minutes later and Soares capped the scoring in the 60th minute. Potter was credited with the assist on Warburton's second marker.

The Bears (0-1-0) missed a pair of penalty kicks, one in each half. Rodes turned aside a PK attempt off the foot of Caroline McCormack in the 78th minute.

The Wildcats head to Waltham, Massachusetts on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match with Brandeis.
