Men's Soccer opens 2026 with shutout of Lancers

WORCESTER, Mass. – Seniors Bruno Teixeira and Christopher Vargas scored goals for the JWU (Providence) men's soccer team in a 2-0 season-opening win at Worcester State University Tuesday night in non-conference action at Coughlin Field.

The Wildcats (1-0-0) struck twice in the final minutes of the first half to take control of the contest. Teixeira opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, finding the back of the net off an assist from classmate Colin Laidlaw. Just over two minutes later, Vargas doubled the JWU lead off a pass from Teixeira.

The Lancers (0-1-0) held an advantage in shots, but freshman goalkeeper William Slayton turned aside all six shots on goal to earn his first collegiate win and shutout. Despite being outshot, the extremely efficient Wildcats capitalized on their chances, scoring twice on just three shots on goal.

JWU heads to Emmanuel (MA) this weekend for a non-conference affair with former GNAC rival Emmanuel (MA) at 3 p.m.
