Golden Bears send Wildcats home with a pair of losses

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The JWU (Providence) baseball team was swept by Western New England University Saturday afternoon in Conference of New England (CNE) action at Trelease Park.

Game One: Golden Bears 10, Wildcats 9
Senior Jack Obert and freshman Dimitri Staphos each drove in three runs, and sophomore Yedan Diaz went 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. A two-run double from Obert in the seventh sparked a three-run inning to cut JWU's deficit to two at 8-6. In the ninth, Staphos doubled in Diaz and redshirt senior Ryan Ducey to tie the game at eight before junior Diego Taveras put the visitors in front with a run-scoring single. The Golden Bears pushed across two in their half of the frame to take game one. Redshirt junior Max Randazzo lasted four innings and allowed four hits and six runs (two earned) with three walks and three strikeouts in a no-decision.

Game Two: Golden Bears 11, Wildcats 5
The Wildcats scored four in the first behind a three-run double off the bat of Staphos. The Golden Bears put up two in the bottom of the inning and one in the second before scoring seven times in the sixth to go ahead by a 10-4 margin. Diaz finished with two hits and sophomore Jeremy Auren knocked in a run in the ninth. Senior Brett Nickerson gave up nine hits and eight runs (seven earned) with no walks and six strikeouts over five in defeat.
