Softball opens conference play with DH split at Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. – The JWU (Providence) softball team split a pair of Conference of New England (CNE) games with Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

Game One: Wildcats 7, Leopards 1
Senior Mady Lyons smacked a two-run home run in the sixth and finished with two hits as the Wildcats moved to 6-5 with the win. Junior Gabby Bellamore added a two-run double in the seventh while juniors Amanda Madigan and Jessica Forneiro, along with first-year Ashley Bergeron, all laced run-scoring singles. Forneiro finished the contest a perfect 4-for-4, and both Bergeron and Lyons each had two hits. Senior Jillian Reed held the Leopards to four hits and one unearned run over seven for the win.

Game Two: Leopards 5, Wildcats 2
Lyons and Bergeron both belted fourth-inning home runs for the Wildcats, who finished with seven hits. Junior Brianna Ghilardi allowed six hits and three runs in 4.1 innings of work before being lifted in favor of Reed, who worked the final 1.2 innings.
