Baseball opens home schedule by taking two off WPI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The JWU (Providence) baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from WPI on Saturday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex. The Wildcats won game one, 6-2, and game two, 3-1.

Game One: Wildcats 6, Engineers 2
The Wildcats exploded for five runs in the fifth, highlighted by two-run singles off the bats of redshirt senior Ryan Ducey and redshirt freshman Justin Hernandez. Junior Jack Dwyer and sophomore Jeremy Auren also drove in runs for the Wildcats, who received a complete-game, five-hit effort from redshirt junior Max Randazzo. He did not walk a batter and fanned nine to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Game Two: Wildcats 3, Engineers 1
Hernandez drove in two with a single down the left field line in the third and Ducey added insurance with a run-scoring single in the fifth. Junior catcher Diego Taveras collected three hits in support of senior Brett Nickerson, who tossed seven innings of shutout ball. Junior Michael Cobb worked the final two frames to pick up his first save.
