Baseball begins season with 6-5 win over Tigers

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Junior Jeff Valdez Jimenez and redshirt freshman Justin Hernandez each drove in two runs to help the JWU (Providence) baseball team open the Colby Greenhalgh-era with a 6-5 win over Hampden-Sydney Sunday evening in non-conference action at Yank Bernier Field.

Hernandez, along with junior Jack Dwyer and freshman Gianni Melendez, all collected two hits for the Wildcats, who scored three runs in each of the first two innings and overcame five errors to pick up the win.

Valdez Jimenez opened the scoring with a double to plate senior Ryan Ducey. Hernandez followed with a triple to bring in Jimenez and Dwyer and make it 3-0. After the Tigers got two back in their half of the first, RBI singles off the bats of Melendez and Dwyer sparked a three-run second and stretched the JWU lead to 6-2.

Hampden-Sydney scratched across two in the sixth and one in the ninth to make it a one-run game at 6-5. The Tigers pushed the tying run to second with one down in the final frame before senior Brett Nickerson recorded the final two outs to earn his first save of the season.

Redshirt junior Max Randazzo allowed three hits and two runs over five to notch the win. He walked three and struck out five before giving way to Nickerson, who worked the final four innings. The Medfield, Massachusetts native allowed three hits and three runs with no walks and four punchouts.
