Hopping's second OT winner of season gives Wildcats 1-0 win over UNE

PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Sophomore Jordan Hopping knocked in her fourth goal of the season3:49 into overtime to give the JWU (Providence) women's ice hockey team a 1-0 win over the University of New England Friday night in Conference of New England (CNE) action at Lynch Arena.

Classmate Katelyn Cardoso turned side 20 shots to record her third shutout of the season and lift the Wildcats over the .500 mark at 9-8-1 (6-5-1 CNE). Junior Sadie Davignon collected the primary assist on the GWG as Hopping banged in her own rebound for JWU, which has now won three of its past five meetings with the Nor'easters (8-11-0, 4-8-0 CNE). The OT winner was the second of the season for Hopping, who also scored the lone goal in a 1-0 over Curry back on November 25.

The Wildcats controlled the majority of offense through 60 minutes, outshooting UNE 28-19 at the end of regulation. The power play – which went 0-for-5 – managed 10 shots on the night while the duo of sophomores Ava Morgan and Marissa Lafferty combined to win 25-of-36 draws between the two (69.4 pct.).

Following a JWU timeout with 1:50 remaining in overtime, Lafferty won an offensive zone draw. After UNE corralled the puck behind its own net, the JWU forecheck forced a turnover and Davignon got the puck to Hopping for a shot from the right circle. UNE goalkeeper Kyleigh Matola stopped the initial shot, but the rebound came right to Hopping, whose shot trickled between the pads.

The Wildcats outshot the Nor'easters 4-1 in overtime and closed the night with a 32-20 advantage. Senior Allyson Barry led all student-athletes with six shots.
