Jack Gerne and
Roman Wainwright scored first-period goals for the JWU (Providence) men's ice hockey team in a 3-2 loss to Suffolk University Friday night in Conference of New England (CNE) action at Lynch Arena.
Junior netminder
Jake Inzirillo stopped 53 shots as the Wildcats (6-8-1, 4-6-0 CNE) were outshot 56-19 on the night – including 21-5 in the third period. Sophomore
Cullen Hennessy recorded two assists while Wainwright also notched a helper.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one despite being outshot 17-10. Gerne opened the scoring 4:53 into the first when he tapped in a pass at the left post off the stick of Hennessy.
Later in the stanza, Hennessy intercepted a clearing attempt by Suffolk netminder Austin McNicholas and hit Gerne in the slot. His shot went wide, but Wainwright collected the puck off the back boards and tucked it into the net for his fifth of the season.
The Rams climbed to within one with a goal at 3:43 of the second before tying the game on the power play 23 seconds into the third on a slapper from the point. Midway through the third, a slapshot from the right circle was tipped home in front by Marko Giourof for his 13th of the season at 10:57.
Suffolk (9-7-1, 9-3-1 CNE) dominated the face-off dot all evening, winning 47 of 79 draws (60 pct.); senior
Davis Bone won 17-of-30 for JWU (57 pct.). Junior defenseman
Joe Freeman was credited with seven blocked shots.
