Owls clip Wildcats in penalty shootout, 3-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Zofia Bangs and sophomore Ava Gaudette scored goals for the JWU (Providence) field hockey team in a 3-2 penalty shootout loss to Westfield State University Wednesday evening in non-conference action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Junior Emily Downing and sophomore Susannah Brown recorded assists for the Wildcats, who outshot the Owls 38-19 – including 10-4 in overtime – but saw their record move to 5-2 with the loss. Sophomore Susannah Brown was credited with a game-high eight shots.

Bangs opened the scoring at 9:03 with her sixth goal of the season. After Westfield State tied the score late in the first, Gaudette put JWU ahead 2-1 just before halftime with a goal at 29:47 of the opening half.

The Owls pulled even at two with a marker 4:19 into the third quarter, and the game remained deadlocked through regulation and overtime. In the shootout, the visitors outscored the Wildcats 3-1 to steal the win.

Senior Rebecca Johnson and junior Sophia Brea combined to make six saves. Emma Gniadek stole the show for the Owls as she notched 24 saves to backstop her team to victory.
