Baseball locks down No. 1 seed by sweeping Lasell

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The JWU (Providence) baseball team locked up the No. 1 seed in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoffs by taking two games from Lasell University Friday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

The Wildcats (23-13, 14-2 GNAC) will host a playoff pod next weekend at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Game One: Wildcats 9, Lasers 2
Senior Owen Davis smacked a three-run home run and drove in four to propel the Wildcats to a game one win. Classmate Trevor Juan also notched three hits – including a solo home run in the fifth – and senior Zachary Amero went 3-for-5 with an RBI single in the ninth. Junior Aidan Vining allowed eight hits and two runs while striking out nine in 7.1 innings to go to 7-0 on the season. Senior Ryan Schultz closed out the contest with 1.2 IP of scoreless relief.

Game Two: Wildcats 5, Lasers 4
Senior Xavier Botelho laced a two-run single in the third and Juan – who finished with three hits – recorded an RBI with an infield single to help JWU build a 4-0 lead. After the Lasers rallied from to pull even with two in the third and two in the fifth, sophomore Jeff Valdez Jimenez lifted a sac fly in the ninth to bring in Davis with the go-ahead run. Schultz, meanwhile, struck out seven in three scoreless innings of relief to notch his fourth win of the season. Junior Ryan Ducey notched three hits and senior Ryan St. Jean tallied two.
