STANDISH, Maine – The JWU (Providence) women's lacrosse team was defeated by St. Joseph's (ME) 9-8 Tuesday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at SJC Athletic Complex.
Freshman
Kelsey Higgins scored three times, and both senior
Isabella Nugent and junior
Mila Kuilan netted two goals as the Wildcats moved to 11-4 on the season (9-2 GNAC).
The Wildcats trailed by one at the half (5-4) as Kuilan struck for two goals in the opening 30 minutes. Higgins tied the game at six midway through the third before the Monks put in two goals before the stanza ended to grab an 8-6 lead.
The home team scored what proved to be the eventual game-winner 2:05 into the fourth as goals from senior
Neely Conner at 10:52 and Higgins with 4:14 to go brought JWU to within one (9-8). Nugent's free position shot attempt with four seconds remaining in regulation was stopped to secure the win for STJ.
Connor collected a team-high eight ground balls while Nugent won seven draw controls and junior
Fara Holland caused three turnovers.
