Nickerson tosses six shutout innings in 8-0 win over Chargers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Brett Nickerson tossed six shutout innings for the JWU (Providence) baseball team in an 8-0 win over Colby-Sawyer College Tuesday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Freshman Yedan Diaz went 2-for-3 with a two-run single as the Wildcats (14-9, 5-0 GNAC) recorded their fourth shutout in their last eight games and won for the 10th time in 11 outings. Senior Trevor Juan went 2-for-5 with an RBI single while freshman and reigning GNAC Rookie of the Week Jeff Valdez Jimenez doubled home a run in the fourth to extend his conference-leading RBI total to 33.

After Diaz plated two to open the scoring in the second, junior Jack Obert brought in senior Ryan St. Jean with a grounder to short to make it 3-0. Senior Owen Davis laced a double down the left field line in the fourth to score Juan before Jimenez plated Diaz and stretched the lead to 5-0. Run-scoring hits from Juan in the fifth and St. Jean in the sixth helped put the game out of reach.

Nickerson allowed just four hits and walked a pair while striking out five to move to 3-2 on the season. Seniors Ryan Schultz and Garrett Fusco, along with sophomore Evan LaMothe, each tossed an inning of scoreless relief.
