Grace Jaffray poured in a game-high 30 points as the JWU (Providence) women's basketball team held off the University of Saint Joseph (CT) 69-64 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Wednesday night at James A. Calhoun Gymnasium.
The Blue Hill, Maine native went 12-of-20 from the field (4-of-8 three-pointers) and snared four rebounds to propel the Wildcats to their 19th win of the season (9-1 GNAC), matching the second-highest total in program history (2014-15 & 2016-17). Classmate
Isabella Suero filled the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds, and three dimes while sophomore
Alexa Lora also scored 11 and handed out three assists.
The Wildcats trailed by one at the break (34-33) but scored 19 of the next 29 points to close the third with 52-44 advantage. The lead swelled to 15 early in the fourth behind a triple from Jaffray, and layups from freshman
Brianne Foley and junior
Mikayla Caruso. JWU pushed the lead to 66-50 with 6:28 remaining in regulation on another bucket from Caruso.
The Blue Jays responded with a 14-0 run to climb to within two points at 66-64 with 22 seconds on the clock. Suero was then fouled and calmly sank a pair of free throws to extend the lead to four. USJ missed a triple at the other end and then fouled Jaffrey, who canned one of two from the line to seal the win.
JWU held a 55-41 edge on the glass and held the Blue Jays to 31 percent shooting (21-of-67) while connecting on 37 percent of its shots (28-of-75).
