JWU improves to 11-1 in GNAC with 13-point win over NEC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Grace Jaffray scored a game-high 32 points as the JWU (Providence) women's basketball team secured its 20th win of the season with an 86-73 triumph over New England College Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Wildcat Center.

The two-time D3hoops.com Team of the Week honoree canned six triples and went 8-of-9 from the charity stripe to propel the Wildcats to their second 20-win campaign in program history (24 in 2015-16). Gaffray also collected three boards and two dimes as JWU shot 41 percent from the field and 38 from downtown (14-of-37).

Freshman Isabella Suero sank five 3-pointers and finished with 22 points, eight boards and three assists while sophomore Alexa Lora netted 15 points in 24 minutes of action. Freshman Brianne Foley was the fourth Wildcat to hit double-figures as she collected 12 points and nine boards.

The Wildcats raced out to a 21-7 lead after one behind 14 from Jaffray and five from Suero. The lead swelled 27 at the break (54-24) as JWU made 50 percent of its second quarter shots (8-of-16).

The Pilgrims (10-13, 4-8 GNAC) outscored the home team 49-35 over the final 20 minutes, draining 19 of their final 33 shots (58 percent). NEC finished the contest with a 41-37 edge on the glass but was hurt by 19 turnovers which turned into 28 JWU points. Caruso led the Wildcats with 10 boards.
