Men's Basketball uses strong defense to down Raiders, 59-49

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Josh Zangerle paced the JWU (Providence) men's basketball team with a 59-49 win over Rivier University Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Wildcat Center.

The Wappingers Falls, New York native also pulled down eight boards and recorded two steals in 29 minutes for the Wildcats (4-13, 2-6 GNAC). Junior Izaiah Shaw-Glen snared 11 boards to go with eight points, two dimes and two steals while senior Jonah Phang scored 11 to go with six boards and three blocks, and graduate student Mike Rogers registered 10 points.

Defensively, JWU held the Raiders (10-10, 4-5 GNAC) to 22 percent shooting (14-of-63) – including 4-of-32 from three-point land (13 pct.). The Wildcats – who shot 35 percent – outrebounded the visitors 45-35 and overcame a 28-12 free throw disparity to secure the win.

The Wildcats shot 43 percent in the first half and took a seven-point lead to the locker room as Zangerle went off for nine points and Shaw-Glen scored six. The Raiders cut their deficit to one nine minutes into the second half, but the Wildcats quickly restored an eight-point lead, sparked by a three-point play by Zangerle. Phang then converted a layup with 4:43 on the clock to push the lead to 11 before a Zangerle layup made it 57-44 with under two minutes to go.
