Grace Jaffray poured in 35 points and classmate
Isabella Suero added 21 for the JWU (Providence) women's basketball team in a season-opening 99-87 win over UMass Dartmouth Saturday evening in non-conference action at the Wildcat Center.
Jaffray also racked up 11 boards and three dimes while Suero knocked down three triples and collected four boards and four dimes as the Wildcats (1-0) shot 46 percent from the field and 81 percent from the charity stripe (26-of-32).
Freshman
Ava Byrne scored 15 in her collegiate debut while sophomore
Brianne Foley recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Senior
Mikayla Caruso pulled down nine boards and chipped in with five points.
The Wildcats trailed by one at the half (42-41) behind 14 from Byrne and 12 from Jaffray. The Corsairs carried a one-point lead into the fourth before the Wildcats ripped off 31 of the next 49 points as Jaffray netted 23 of her game-high 35 over the final 20 minutes while Suero dropped in 18 points.
JWU finished with a 50-45 edge in rebounding and committed just 11 turnovers.
