CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore
Grace Jaffray dropped in a game-high 36 points to propel the JWU (Providence) women's basketball team to a 69-67 win at MIT Thursday night in non-conference action at Rockwell Cage.
The reigning Conference of New England (CNE) Player of the Week knocked down three triples and sank 17-of-18 from the charity stripe – including two with the game tied at 67 with six seconds remaining – to push the Wildcats to 2-0 on the season.
Classmate
Brianne Foley filled the stat sheet with 14 points, 13 rebounds, six steals and three blocks while senior
Mikayla Caruso chipped in with eight points and seven boards.
The Engineers held JWU to 31 percent shooting but committed 25 turnovers which turned into 20 points for the visitors.
The Wildcats shot 38 percent in the first half and led by five at halftime (42-30). MIT opened the third with a 15-2 run to grab a one-point lead (46-45), then grabbed up a six-point lead at 64-58 with 4:10 remaining in the fourth.
An and-1 play from Jaffray followed by a layup from Foley with 2:13 to go tied the game at 65. Jaffray then canned two free throws to stake the Wildcats to a two-point lead (67-65) with 1:23 to go and the Engineers pulled even again 10 seconds later.
Shortly thereafter, Jaffrey was fouled with six seconds remaining and connected on the winning free throws.
