Wildcats rise up and take down Saints, 68-61

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Brianne Foley registered 17 points and 10 rebounds for the JWU (Providence) women's basketball team in a 68-61 win over Emmanuel (MA) College Tuesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Wildcat Center.

The New Rochelle, New York native played all 40 minutes and also collected two steals, two dimes and one block as the Wildcats moved to 11-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Classmate Isabella Suero led all student-athletes with 23 points while dishing out five assists, and sophomore Alexa Lora scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half, highlighted by three 3-pointers.

JWU overcame a sluggish first quarter by shooting 71 percent in the second to build a 32-30 halftime lead. Foley paced the Wildcats with 15 points while Suero added 10. The Saints (5-6, 0-1 GNAC) held freshman Grace Jaffray – one of the leading scorers in the nation – to one point in the first half and outrebounded the Wildcats 22-16, including 10-4 on the offensive glass.

The visitors moved ahead 44-37 midway through the third before a layup form Foley, a three form Suero, and a layup from junior Mikayla Caruso tied the game at 44. The Saints then held a 61-58 lead with 2:01 remaining in regulation when Suero knocked down a jumper to cut the JWU deficit to one.

Following an Emmanuel turnover, Jaffray canned a jumper at the top of the key with 1:13 to go to put the Wildcats ahead for good. JWU – who was a perfect 6-for-6 down the stretch to lock down the win – finished the night shooting 39 percent from the field and turned 20 Saints turnovers into 13 points.

Jaffray closed the contest with nine points, seven rebounds and three steals while Caruso filled the stat sheet with seven points, six boards, and two assists in 40 minutes.
