JWU holds off Emmanuel (MA) for first GNAC win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Izaiah Shaw-Glen picked up a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds in a 67-62 win for the JWU (Providence) men's basketball team over Emmanuel (MA) College Tuesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Wildcat Center.

Freshman Roel Figueroa scored a team-high 18 points in his first collegiate start as the Wildcats (3-8) picked up their first conference win of the season. Graduate student Mike Rogers knocked down 5-of-8 off the bench to finish with 12 points while freshman RJ Jones chipped in with 10 points.

The Wildcats – who committed only 10 turnovers – shot 42 percent from the field (24-of-57), connected on 13-of-15 from the charity stripe (87 percent), and outrebounded the Saints 39-37. Defensively, they held the visitors to 35 percent shooting.

Figueroa scored a game-high 11 first-half points to help JWU build a six-point halftime lead (34-28). The Wildcats shot 41 percent through the opening 20 minutes and received two triples off the bench from freshman Azariah Harrison and Rogers, one of which gave them the lead for good midway through the first half.

The Wildcats lead grew to as many as nine in the second half following a layup from Jones with 6:55 remaining in the second half. The Saints responded with a 14-6 run to climb to within a point at 60-59 with under two minutes remaining before a three from Shaw-Glen with 17 ticks on the clock pushed the lead back to six.
