Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Monks deal Wildcats first GNAC setback

STANDISH, Maine – Freshman Grace Jaffray dropped in a game-high 29 points for the JWU (Providence) women's basketball team, which suffered a 71-64 setback at St. Joseph's (ME) Wednesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Harry Alfond Center.

Jaffray knocked down 10 of her 22 field goal attempts and went 8-of-12 from the charity stripe as the Wildcats dropped their first conference game of the season (12-2, 3-1 GNAC). The Blue Hill, Maine native also pulled down 13 rebounds and blocked three shots while classmate and reigning GNAC Rookie of the Week Brianne Foley registered 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal before fouling out.

Freshman Mia Cruz filled the stat sheet with 13 points, five rebounds, five steals, and four dimes in 32 minutes, and was a perfect 3-of-3 from downtown. JWU finished the night shooting 38 percent (22-of-58) and connected on 7-of-18 from behind the arc (39 pct.).

The Wildcats turned 15 Monks turnovers into 15 points and went toe-to-toe with the defending conference champions for three quarters of play. The home team outscored JWU26-14 in the second quarter as they sank 50 percent of their shots while holding the Wildcats to 4-of-14 in the frame (29 percent).

St. Joseph's carried an eight-point lead into the fourth (62-54) and never let it dip below seven, once following a free throw from Jaffray 1:23 into the fourth and later on a three from Foley with 3:21 on the clock. Suero missed a three with 40 seconds left that would have made it a four-point game.
