Field Hockey blanks Raiders at the SMAC, 3-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Graduate student Megan Salsinha and junior Emma Ferrara each scored first-half goals for the JWU (Providence) field hockey team in a 3-0 win over Rivier University Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Junior Zofia Bangs added an insurance marker late in the fourth for the Wildcats (4-3, 2-0 GNAC), who climbed above the .500 mark by outshooting the Raiders 29-5. Senior Haley Budenas, along with sophomores Elaina Fseisi, Ava Pontes, and Rayne Millett, were all credited with assists for JWU.

Salsinha polished of a perfectly executed penalty corner 9:32 into the first to stake the Wildcats to a 1-0 lead. Budenas inserted the ball to Fseisi, who let go of a shot that was redirected by Salsinha for her fifth goal of the season.

Ferrara doubled the lead late in the second when she converted a pass from Pontes into her third tally of the season at 27:09. Bangs polished off a feed from Millett with 2:13 remaining to cap the scoring.

Junior Rebecca Johnson got the start in goal for the Wildcats and finished with two saves. Sophomore Sophia Brea played the final 15 minutes.
