Field Hockey opens 2024 season with 8-0 whitewash of Rams

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The JWU (Providence) field hockey program opened the 2024 campaign with a dominant 8-0 win over Framingham State University in non-conference action Friday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Seniors Izzy Ward and Haley Budenas each scored a pair of goal for the Wildcats (1-0), who also received a goal and an assist from junior Emma Ferrara. JWU outshot the Rams 49-4 – including 27-2 over the final 30 minutes of the contest – and saw 10 different student-athletes record at least one point in the contest.

The Wildcats led 2-0 at halftime behind goals from Budenas at 11:12 and Ward less than three minutes later. JWU struck for two more goals in a span of 5:04 in the third to extend their lead to 4-0 before exploding for four tallies in the final stanza. Freshman Ava Gaudette collected a pair of assists in the final 15 minutes of action while senior Darian Shepherd and junior Caitlin Quinn picked up their first markers of the season.

Sophomore Sophia Brea got the start in goal for head coach Lisa Lopes and recorded one save in the first half before being lifted in favor of junior Rebecca Johnson to start the second half.
