Wildcats score 7-1 win over Mariners in GNAC Playoffs

STANDISH, Maine – Freshman Amanda Madigan recorded a pair of hits for the JWU (Providence) softball team in a 7-1 win over Mitchell College Friday afternoon in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Playoffs at St. Joseph's (ME).

Sophomore Mady Lyons also collected two hits and drove in on with a single in the second for the No. 3 seed Wildcats (21-18), who advance to face top-seeded St. Joseph's (ME) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Junior Katie Scheid shined in the circle for head coach Jon Ladino, holding the Mariners to just three hits and one unearned run while striking out five to improve to 10-7 on the season.

Junior Caroline Amorelli staked the Wildcats to a 1-0 lead with a sac fly in the first. Three innings later, Lyons RBI single, combined with a pair of unearned runs, pushed the lead to 4-0. JWU added another unearned run in the sixth before freshman Maddie Alexander stole home in the seventh to make it 6-0. Classmate Jessica Forneiro capped the scoring later in the frame when she scored the team's fifth unearned run of the contest on a fielding error.
