JWU softball downs NEC to advance to GNAC Semifinals

STANDISH, Maine – Freshman Jessica Forneiro singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for the JWU (Providence) softball team in a 4-3 win over New England College Saturday afternoon in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament at St. Joseph's College of Maine.

The No. 3 seed Wildcats – who began the day with loss to the top-seeded Monks – will meet them again on Sunday needing two wins to advance to the GNAC Championship.

Game One: Monks 11, Wildcats 4
Graduate student Hailey Erickson went 2-for-3 with an RBI single, and both senior Julia Huzi and sophomore Mady Lyons picked up an RBI for the Wildcats. Junior Mackenzie Clee scored a pair of runs for JWU, which committed four errors and walked seven batters – five of which came in the first two innings as the Monks built a 5-0 lead.

Game Two: Wildcats 4, Pilgrims 3
The Wildcats trailed 3-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth before a home run off the bat of graduate student Hailey Erickson brought them to within one. In the sixth, Erickson plated senior Julia Huzi with a single to right to tie the game, and later led off the ninth inning with a single. After moving to second on a ground out from junior Caroline Amorelli, sophomore Rachel Gosselin pinch ran for Erickson and scored on Forneiro's single to left center. Junior Katie Scheid allowed nine hits and three runs (two earned) with one walk and three punchouts in nine innings of work for the win.
