Wildcats, Mariners split key GNAC doubleheader

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The JWU (Providence) softball team split its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with Mitchell College Thursday evening at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Game One: Wildcats 9, Mariners 7
Junior Mackenzie Clee went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, and sophomore Mady Lyons laced a two-run double to center and plated another with a sac fly as the Wildcats pounded out 15 hits in the opener. Graduate student Hailey Erickson picked up three hits – including an RBI single in the fourth – while senior Julia Huzi collected three hits and an RBI. Clee registered her third win of the season, allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings of work.

Game Two: Mariners 9, Wildcats 2
The Wildcats raced out to a 2-0 lead in the third on a throwing error and an RBI single from Erickson. The Mariners answered by scoring in each of the final four innings, highlighted by three-run efforts in both the fourth and sixth innings. The Wildcats – who were held to three hits – were hurt by four errors which led to six unearned runs. Junior Katie Scheid took the loss as she surrendered 16 hits in seven innings of work to move to 8-7 on the season.
