Softball opens 2024 campain in Florida

LEESBURG, Fla. – The JWU (Providence) softball team opened the 2024 campaign with four games in a span of 36 hours in Kissimmee and Leesburg, Fla.
 
Mount Union 16, JWU (Providence) 8 (6 inn.)
Freshman Jessica Forneiro drove in three runs and junior Danielle Floyd picked up a pair of RBI with a first-inning double for the Wildcats, who also received two hits from seniors Julia Huzi and Hailey Erickson. JWU led 8-0 after two turns at bat before surrendering six in the bottom of the second and eight in the fifth as the Purple Raiders as Wildcat pitchers surrendered 10 walks in their season-opener.
 
JWU (Providence) 11, Russell Sage 2 (5 inn.)
Junior Carolina Amorelli went 3-for-3 with a two-run double and a two-run home run as the Wildcats cruised past the Gators. Amorelli smacked a two-run home run in the second before launching a two-run double in the third to blow the game open. Erickson also recorded three hits and plated three runs while sophomore Mady Lyons collected two hits. Junior Katie Scheid scattered four hits and allowed two runs over five to earn record the win.
 
DeSales 6, JWU (Providence) 1
Junior Mackenzie Clee and Forneiro each collected a pair of hits and freshman Macy Pagano drove in a run with a sac fly in the second for the Wildcats. Clee made her first start of the season in the circle and allowed 10 hits and six runs in 5.2 innings of work. She did not walk a batter and fanned four.
 
Alvernia 5, JWU (Providence) 4
Forneiro sparked a four-run fourth inning with a two-run double, which was bookended by an RBI groundout from Lyons and an RBI single off the bat of freshman Gabby Bellamore. Huzi, Forneiro, and Bellamore each collected three hits in support of Reed, who allowed six hits and five runs with three walks and three punchouts over five innings of work.
