Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Brea's second goal in OT gives JWU 2-1 win over UMass Boston

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Freshman Sophia Brea scored the game-tying goal late in regulation before potting the game-winner in OT for the JWU (Providence) women's ice hockey team in a thrilling 2-1 win over UMass Boston Saturday afternoon in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action at the New England Sports Village.

Brea sent the game to overtime with her fourth goal of the season with 2:05 remaining in the third period, then won the game 1:22 into the extra session with an end-to-end rush. The win gives the Wildcats six wins on the season and sets up a NEHC Quarterfinal contest with No. 1 seed Norwich next Saturday a 3 p.m. in Northfield, Vt.

The Beacons outshot the Wildcats 37-24 – including 18-6 in the third period, when they broke a scoreless tie 1:31 into the stanza on the PP. The game remained 1-0 until Brea took a feed from junior Reese Middendorf and scored on a breakaway to tie the game.

In overtime, Brea collected the puck in her own zone, split a pair of defenders at the blue line, and tucked the puck inside the right post on her backhand. Senior Sara Cruise – who was honored prior to the start of the contest – was credited with an assist on the game-winner.

Senior netminder Leah White recorded 36 saves to earn her fourth win of the season.
