Lafferty pots game-winner in 2-1 win at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Freshman Marissa Lafferty scored the game-winning goal on the power-play early in the second period as the JWU (Providence) women's ice hockey team secured a 2-1 win at the University of New England Friday night in Conference of New England action at Harold Alfond Forum.

Sophomore Zoe Tow also scored for the Wildcats, who moved to 1-1-0 on the season in their first-ever game as a member of the CNE. Senior netminder Sofia Tamayo turned aside 22 en route to her 13th collegiate win.

Senior Harmony Chicoose and freshman Ashlyn Libby assisted on Tow's first goal of the campaign at 17:17 of the first period, giving JWU a 1-0 lead. Lafferty's goal 4:03 into the second was assisted by freshman Kailin Kane and senior Madi Fox, and doubled the visitors lead.

The Nor'easters cut their deficit in half midway through the second but were held off the scoresheet the rest of the way. Senior Reese Middendorf blocked a team-high five shots while freshman Cailean Corbally was credited with three.

The Wildcats dominated the face-off circle, winning 26 of 38 draws (68.4 pct.) behind Kane, who won six-of-seven (85.7 pct.). UNE held a slim 32-22 edge in shots.
