ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Freshman
Joe Freeman scored his second goal of the season 2:58 into overtime to give JWU-Providence a 5-4 win over Assumption College Tuesday night in non-conference men's ice hockey action at the New England Sports Village.
Freeman – along with senior
Brendan Shandley – each finished the night with a goal and two assists as the Wildcats rallied from a pair of two-goal deficits to hand the Greyhounds just their third loss of the season. Sophomore
Cam Martin scored twice while seniors
Kadyn Fennell and
Brent Rickett each collected two assists.
JWU entered the third period trailing 3-1 and, after cutting its deficit to 3-2 on Martin's second goal of the season 2:08 into the stanza, saw Assumption benefit from some puck luck and regain a two-goal advantage with 6:42 remaining.
Martin's second goal of the night 1:10 later brought the Wildcats to within one before Shandley sent the game to OT with a wrister over the shoulder of Greyhounds netminder Thomas McLarnon. Moments earlier, JWU pulled freshman netminder
Jake Inzirillo for the extra attacker.
In overtime, the Wildcats went to work on a 4-on-3 power play. Shandley fed Rickett from the left circle for a one-timer in the high slot, but his stick shattered and the puck landed on the stick of Freeman, who was parked in front. The defenseman turned on his backhand and roofed the puck over McLarnon for the game-winner.
Inzirillo finished with a career-high 47 saves for JWU, which was outshot 51-35 on the evening. The home team went 2-for-6 with the man advantage and killed off 4-of-5 Assumption PP opportunities.
