Sara Cruise scored the game-winning goal with 49 seconds remaining in overtime to propel the JWU-Providence women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 win over Castleton Saturday afternoon in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's hockey action at the New England Sports Village.
Cruise – who tied the game at two 6:16 into the third – scored her second OT winner in less than 24 hours for the Wildcats, who improved to 4-12-0 with the win (3-7-0 NEHC). Sophomore
Alexia Labre scored her first goal at JWU while senior netminder
Leah White turned aside 26 saves to earn her third win of the season.
The Wildcats fell behind 2-0 following a PP goal from the Spartans at 14:52 of the second before Labre's marker nine seconds later cut their deficit in half. Junior
Brooke Dineen and freshman
Brynn Leahy were credited with assists on the goal.
In the third, Cruise one-timed a feed from junior
Harmony Chicoose from behind the net to tie the game at two. Junior
Madi Fox collected the second assist on the tying goal.
In overtime, sophomore
Kylie O'Keefe sent the puck towards the net from the right circle and Cruise redirected it for her fourth of the season. Sophomore
Allyson Barry started the play and earned the second assist.
The Wildcats did not receive their first power-play opportunity until the third period and finished the contest 2-for-3 on the PP. Castleton – which was outshot 32-28 – went 2-for-6 with the extra skater.
