PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The top-seeded Johnson & Wales (RI) University baseball team blanked Elms College 2-0 Thursday afternoon in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoffs at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Freshman Aidan Vining tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out 10 to improve to 7-2 on the season. With the win, the Wildcats (26-13) advance to face Anna Maria on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Earlier this season, the AMCats took two from JWU in Providence.
The Wildcats scored the only run they would need in the first when sophomore Trevor Juan singled with one down and came around to score on an RBI single from junior EJ Leone. JWU tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on a fielders' choice off the bat of junior Thorin Sanchez-Guerra.
The Blazers (23-14) will face Lasell on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in an elimination game at the SMAC.
