PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales (RI) University softball team split its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with Albertus Magnus College Monday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Game One: Wildcats 17, Falcons 5 (5 inn.)
Freshman Mady Lyons belted a pair of home runs in the fourth inning as the Wildcats threw up an '11' spot in the frame and rolled to a win in game one. Graduate student Jill Pulek smacked a two-run home run in the first and finished with three RBI while sophomore Caroline Amorelli picked up a pair of RBI singles and also plated a run with a sac fly. JWU pounded out 17 hits in support of sophomore Katie Scheid, who allowed five hits and five runs (two earned) while striking out two to move to 8-2 on the season. Sophomore Mackenzie Clee was 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Game Two: Falcons 7, Wildcats 5
The Falcons rallied from a 2-0 deficit for five in the fourth, and singles runs in the fifth and sixth to take game two and salvage a week. Senior Meaghan Gurska launched a two-run home run to the opposite field in the fifth which temporarily tied the game at five while Lyons, Amorelli, and junior Hailey Erickson all picked up an RBI. Junior Sage Borkowski took the loss for JWU, allowing 10 hits and six runs in 4.2 innings of work.
