Wildcats, Seahawks split non-conference DH in Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales (RI) University softball team split its non-conference doubleheader at Salve Regina University Wednesday afternoon at Toppa Field.

Game One: Wildcats 9, Seahawks 5
The Wildcats scored five times in the first without the benefit of a hit, scoring twice on a bases-loaded walk as well as on a bases-loaded HBP, a wild pitch and an error. They added one in the second on an RBI double off the bat of freshman Mady Lyons and two more in the sixth on a double from graduate student Jill Pulek. JWU – which tacked on one more in the seventh on a Salve Regina error – saw sophomore Katie Scheid improve to 14-3 with a complete-game effort in the circle. She allowed five hits and five runs (two earned) with two walks and five strikeouts.

Game Two: Seahawks 2, Wildcats 1
Junior Hailey Erickson drove in the lone JWU run in the first on a sac fly to center as the Wildcats were held to two hits. The Seahawks tied the game in the bottom of the frame and later won the game in the seventh on a leadoff double and a one-out single to right. Junior Sage Borkowski allowed eight hits and two runs to go with three walks.
