Wildcats open season with two losses at Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Johnson & Wales (RI) University baseball team opened its season with a pair of losses as Johns Hopkins University Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Babb Field at Stromberg Stadium.

Game One: Blue Jays 5, Wildcats 4 (11 inn.)
Sophomore Owen Davis smacked a three-run home run in the second and graduate student Griffin Snyder laced an RBI single in the fourth for JWU, which led 4-3 heading to the ninth and was one out away from victory. After the Blue Jays – who received 11 votes in the d3baseball.com Preseason Top 25 poll – tied the game on a run-scoring single, Matthew Cooper ended the tilt with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th.

Freshman Aidan Vining started on the bump for JWU and allowed three hits and three runs over six innings of work. He did not allow a walk and fanned six Senior Miles Kelly recorded three hits in the loss for the Wildcats.

Game Two: Blue Jays 7, Wildcats 5
Sophomore Trevor Juan belted a two-run home run and junior Riley Hasson recorded a run-scoring single. Kelley, Juan, sophomore Nicolas Fortes, and freshman Jack Obert all picked up two hits for the Wildcats while junior Thorin Sanchez-Guerra drew a bases-loaded walk.

Sophomore Ryan Schultz pitched to a no-decision as he surrendered five hits and three runs in four innings of work to go with a pair of strikeouts. Freshman Max Randazzo took the loss as he was tagged for six hits and four runs in 2.1 innings.
