JWU softball scores 16 in second game to earn split with Engineers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Johnson & Wales (RI) University softball team split its doubleheader with WPI Saturday afternoon in the non-conference home opener at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Game One: Engineers 13, Wildcats 5 (6 inn.)

The Engineers belted a pair of three-run home runs in the first inning and never looked back. Graduate student Jill Pulek, juniors Julia Huzi and Hailey Erickson, and freshman Mady Lyons each drove in a run for the Wildcats. Erickson, graduate student Megan Antaya, and sophomore Mackenzie Clee all collected two hits.

Game Two: Wildcats 16, Engineers 8
The Wildcats exploded for eight runs in the second inning, highlighted by two-run singles off the bats of Clee and Lyons. They tacked on six more in the fourth on a two-run single from Erickson, an RBI double by Pulek, an RBI single from Lyons, and an RBI groundout from freshman Jadyn Torres. Pulek finished the contest 4-for-5 while Clee, Lyons, senior Meaghan Gurska, and sophomore Caroline Amorelli all picked up two hits. Junior Sage Borkowski moved to 3-2 with the win.
