Pontes goal propels Wildcats past Sharks, 1-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Ava Pontes scored the only goal of the game 1:21 into the second half to lift the JWU-Providence field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Simmons University to open Homecoming Weekend Friday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

The win moves the Wildcats to 11-0 on the season (7-0 GNAC) and also keeps them perfect on their home turn at 8-0. JWU outshot the Sharks 9-5 and held a 6-3 advantage in corners, one of which led to the GWG.

Graduate student Margaret Johnson inserted the ball to senior Kaitlyn Freeman at the top of the circle. Freeman stepped in and ripped a shot was kicked out by the Simmons goalkeeper, but Pontes pounced on the rebounds and smacked it into the cage for her ninth of the season.

Freshman Sophia Brea was credited with two saves en route to her 11th win of the campaign.
