PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Austin Sweeney scored the only goal of the match late in the second half to lift the Johnson & Wales (RI) University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over WPI Sunday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Contest.
Sophomore Conner Elliott picked up the assist on the game-winner for the Wildcats (3-1-1), who last suffered a home defeat on September 28, 2018 – a 1-0 loss to Endicott College. Since that time, JWU is 25-0-3 on its home turf.
On the GWG, Elliott slipped a pass behind the WPI defense and Sweeney knocked the ball into the left side of the net with just over nine minutes remaining in the match.
Senior goalkeeper Jacob Friedman tallied three saves and moved to 3-1-1 on the season with the win. Each team was credited with eight shots while the Engineers (2-1-2) were assessed 18 fouls compared to nine for the Wildcats.
