Wildcats rally twice to earn 2-2 tie with Blue Jays

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Conner Elliott scored the game-tying goal early in the second half in Johnson & Wales (RI) University's 2-2 tie with the University of Saint Joseph (CT) Wednesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Elliott also picked up an assist on graduate student Nick Gutekunst's third goal of the season for the Wildcats, who moved to 11-1-3 with the draw and 8-0-2 in conference play. JWU outshot the Blue Jays 20-13 and held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

USJ (8-3-3, 5-2-3 GNAC) opened the scoring 13:22 into the match when Brian Silva found the back of the net, leaving the Wildcats trailing at home for the first time this season. Less than four minutes later, graduate student Ricky Africo sent a corner kick into the box that Elliott headed over to Gutekunst. His initial shot was stopped, but he knocked in the rebound to tie the match at one.

The Blue Jays regained the lead at 2-1 on a goal from Michael Torres at 31:44, and his squad carried that lead into the half despite being outshot 12-8 in the stanza. JWU drew even at 53:47 when Elliott converted a long pass from Africo into his fifth marker of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Jacob Friedman recorded four saves for the Wildcats.
